Former South African rugby union player Botha Rossouw died on August 29, 2023, at the age of 53. The cause of death was reported to be a pulmonary embolism.
Rossouw, a versatile athlete, excelled not only in rugby but also in track and field during his youth. His rugby talent shone brightly, leading to his selection for the 1992 Springbok tour to Europe – a historic moment as it marked the team's re-admission to international rugby after the apartheid era. At the time, Rossouw was still a student at North West University, playing alongside future Rugby World Cup champions.
While injury cut short his tour and ultimately capped his Springbok appearances to two midweek matches, Rossouw left his mark on South African rugby. He continued his career with provincial teams like the Leopards, Vodacom Bulls, and SWD Eagles, retiring from provincial play in 1998. He also ventured abroad to play in France before transitioning into business ventures after his playing days.
South African Rugby President Mark Alexander expressed condolences to Rossouw's family and friends, remembering him as a talented player and a sportsman who excelled in multiple disciplines. Tributes poured in for Rossouw, acknowledging his contribution to the Springbok legacy and his dedication to the sport.
