Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim, a stalwart of the South African struggle against apartheid, passed away on December 6, 2021, at the age of 84. Ebrahim, fondly known as "Ebie," dedicated his life to fighting for a free and just South Africa.

Ebrahim joined the fight for liberation as a teenager, becoming an activist with the African National Congress (ANC) in 1952. As the apartheid regime tightened its grip, he joined the ANC's armed wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe. His dedication to the cause landed him in the notorious Robben Island prison, where he spent years alongside iconic figures like Nelson Mandela.

Even within the harsh confines of prison, Ebrahim's spirit remained unbroken. He is remembered for using wit and resourcefulness to challenge his captors, such as playing Bollywood music to confuse the guards.

Following his release in 1991, Ebrahim embraced the dawn of a free South Africa. He served as a lawmaker in the first democratically elected Parliament in 1994 and later as Deputy Minister of International Relations between 2009 and 2014.

Ebrahim was more than a politician; he was a symbol of resilience and unwavering commitment to justice. His legacy extends beyond South Africa's borders, with recognition for his work resolving international conflicts.

Ebrahim leaves behind a grieving family and a nation forever grateful for his immense contributions. Gauteng province honored him with a state funeral, a testament to his enduring impact.
