It is with deep sorrow that we mark the passing of Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel "Nathi" Mthethwa, who died in Paris, France, on Monday, September 30, 2025, at the age of 58. At the time of his passing, he was serving as South Africa's Ambassador to France, a post he held from February 2024.

Born in Clermont, Natal Province, on January 23, 1967, Mr. Mthethwa grew up in Klaarwater and KwaMthethwa. His education included a diploma in community development from the University of Natal, and certificates in mining engineering from the University of Johannesburg, and in communications and leadership from Rhodes University.

Mr. Mthethwa's public service career was extensive. He was a long-time member of the African National Congress (ANC) and served in the National Assembly of South Africa from 2002 until his resignation in March 2023. He held various key positions, including Chief Whip of the Majority Party in the National Assembly in 2008.

He served in the South African Cabinet for nearly 15 years, holding various ministerial portfolios:

Minister of Safety and Security/Police (September 2008 – May 2014)

Minister of Arts and Culture (May 2014 – May 2019)

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture (May 2019 – March 2023)

Beyond his political career, Mr. Mthethwa was an activist from a young age, joining the Klaarwater Youth Organisation in 1982. He also served as a shop steward for the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), where his activism led him to underground work for the ANC's Operation Vula in the late 1980s.

The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by French authorities.

He is survived by his wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, whom he married in 2013, and his family, to whom we extend our deepest condolences.

The repatriation of his body will take place once all formal processes have been completed. The family has taken solace in the unity and compassion shown by South Africans during this time of grief.
