Nkosi Mpumalanga “Gwebingqele” Gwadiso, the revered Chairperson of the Eastern Cape House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders and head of the Khonjwayo Traditional Council, passed away peacefully of natural causes in his sleep on Thursday, 16 July 2026, at his home in Ngqeleni.

He was 62 years old. Known as a "gentle giant," Nkosi Gwadiso was an exceptionally forward-thinking and principled leader who dedicated his life to restoring the dignity of traditional governance and advancing rural economic development.

Early Life and CareerRoyal Lineage: Traced his deep leadership roots to his forefather, Chief Nogemane, who famously shielded King Sarhili of amaXhosa during the 1877 war of resistance. Early Professional Life: Began his career working with humility and purpose at the University of Transkei.

Corporate Sector: Moved to Gauteng to excel in the corporate sector before answering a higher calling to return and serve the people of his forefathers. Social Advocacy: Championed critical and sensitive cultural mandates, including pioneering efforts for safer winter youth initiation seasons.

National Reliability: Remembered by the National House of Traditional and Khoisan leaders as a uniquely diligent leader who never hesitated to answer the call of national service.

Final Tributes and Funeral ArrangementsIn honor of his extraordinary public service, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, with the approval of President Cyril Ramaphosa, has declared a Provincial Official Funeral.

Nkosi Gwadiso will be laid to rest on Friday, 24 July 2026, at the Nkanunu Great Place in Ngqeleni. As a permanent mark of national mourning and respect, South African national flags will fly at half-mast across the Eastern Cape province on the day of his funeral.

He leaves behind an irreplaceable void in the Gwadiso royal family, the AmaKhonjwayo nation, and the broader traditional leadership fraternity across South Africa.
