In Loving Memory of Hyron Diego Andrews (1995–2026)

South African Rugby Mourns the Passing of Hyron Andrews

South African rugby is mourning the passing of Hyron Diego Andrews, the professional lock forward who died on 16 October 2026 at the age of 31 while on tour in France with the Lions.

Born on 6 July 1995, Andrews built an impressive professional career that included representing the Sharks, Sale Sharks in England and the Lions, as well as South Africa at Under-20 level.

His death came as a shock to teammates, supporters and the wider rugby community, bringing an early end to the life of a player who had already spent more than a decade competing at a high level.

Early Rugby Career

Hyron Andrews was born in Paarl in the Western Cape and developed his rugby talent from a young age.

Standing out for his height, physical presence and ability at lock, he progressed through South Africa's competitive youth rugby structures and earned national recognition when he represented the Junior Springboks at the 2015 World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

That tournament formed an important early milestone in his career and helped establish him as one of the promising young forwards emerging from South African rugby.

His performances at junior level paved the way for a professional career in which he would compete in both South Africa and England.

Building a Career with the Sharks

Andrews became closely associated with the Sharks, where he spent a significant part of his professional career.

He represented the Durban-based franchise across major domestic and international competitions and developed into an experienced member of their forward pack.

Playing at lock, Andrews was known for his line-out ability, physical contribution and work in the tight phases of the game.

His years with the Sharks gave him regular exposure to high-level competition and allowed him to play alongside and against many of South Africa's leading rugby players.

The experience he gained during this period formed the foundation for the next chapter of his career abroad.

Playing in England

Andrews later moved to England to join Sale Sharks, extending his professional career into the English Premiership.

The move gave him the opportunity to test himself in another demanding rugby environment and added international club experience to his career.

His time in England demonstrated the continued demand for experienced South African forwards in overseas competitions.

After his period with Sale Sharks, Andrews returned to South Africa and joined the Lions ahead of the 2026/27 season.

His move to Johannesburg marked a fresh chapter in his career and an opportunity to bring his experience back into South African provincial rugby.

His Final Tour

In October 2026, Andrews travelled with the Lions to France as part of the team's rugby commitments.

On 16 October, news emerged that he had died while the team was abroad.

Initial reports referred to an incident at the team hotel, but the circumstances of his death were later clarified following a post-mortem examination conducted in France.

The Lions subsequently confirmed, on behalf of the Andrews family, that he had suffered an aortic dissection.

French authorities described the death as resulting from natural causes, with the medical findings indicating a tear in the body's main artery.

The later findings helped clarify earlier reports and established that his death was not caused by the fall initially associated with the incident.

Tributes from the Rugby Community

Following confirmation of Andrews' passing, tributes were shared across South African rugby.

SA Rugby extended condolences to his family, teammates and friends, recognising his contribution to the sport and the teams he had represented throughout his career.

The Lions also paid tribute to their player as the organisation and squad dealt with his sudden loss during their tour.

Messages from former teammates, clubs and supporters reflected the strong impression Andrews had made during his career.

For the Sharks, Sale Sharks and Lions communities, his death represented the loss of a player whose career had connected different chapters of South African and international rugby.

Remembering Hyron Andrews

Hyron Andrews leaves behind a rugby career that took him from Paarl to the Junior Springboks, through many seasons with the Sharks, into England with Sale Sharks and finally back to South Africa with the Lions.

His journey reflected the commitment required to build and sustain a professional sporting career across different competitions and countries.

Although his life was cut short at just 31, Andrews had already achieved what many aspiring rugby players work towards — representing his country at youth level and competing professionally at the highest levels of the domestic game.

He will be remembered by teammates, coaches, supporters and family members for the years he devoted to the sport he loved.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Rest in Peace, Hyron Diego Andrews.
