Mary Kuksie Twala, a renowned South African actress, passed away on July 4, 2020, at the age of 80. Twala had a prolific career in the entertainment industry, featuring in numerous South African productions and earning critical acclaim for her performances.

Twala was born on September 14, 1939, in Soweto, Johannesburg. She was married to actor Ndaba Mhlongo until his death in 1989, and they had two children, including the well-known actor and media personality Somizi Mhlongo.

Twala began her acting career in the 1990s and quickly established herself as a talented performer. She appeared in several local productions, including a guest role in the first season of Generations and a leading role in the local drama, Ubizo: The Calling.

In 2010, Twala received widespread recognition for her supporting role in the film Hopeville, which won numerous awards in several festivals and award ceremonies. Her performance as "Ma Dolly" earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination in the 6th Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Twala continued to feature in critically acclaimed productions throughout her career, including the 2015 film Vaya and the 2017 sports drama Beyond the River. In 2016, she was part of the ensemble cast in Comatose, a film that featured top acts across Africa.

Despite facing health challenges, Twala remained committed to her craft and continued to act. She was set to feature in a new television drama series on Mzanzi Magic, The Imposter, before her passing.

Twala passed away on July 4, 2020, at Parklane private hospital in Johannesburg. Due to Covid-19 regulations, her funeral could only be attended by a maximum of 50 people. Twala's passing was deeply felt by her family, friends, and fans, and she will be remembered as a trailblazer in the South African entertainment industry. Her legacy as a talented and versatile actress will continue to inspire generations to come.
