Zoe Gail, a South African-born British-American actress known for her comedic talent, passed away on February 20, 2020, in Las Vegas, Nevada, on her 100th birthday. She was born Zoe Margaret Stapelton on February 20, 1920, in Cape Town, Cape Province, Union of South Africa.
Gail had a successful career as an actress, appearing in various films and TV shows. She was particularly well-known for her roles in "Tonight at the London Palladium" (1955), "No Orchids for Miss Blandish" (1948), "Lady Luck" (1948), and "Here's Looking at You." Her comedic abilities were also widely recognized.
In addition to her acting career, Gail had a passion for music. She was chosen to switch on the lights at the West End of London in 1949, a decade after they were turned off due to the outbreak of World War II. She stood on the balcony of the Criterion Restaurant at Piccadilly Circus, dressed in a black top hat, white tie and tails, and sang her hit song "I’m Going to Get Lit Up When the Lights Go Up in London." Gail then said "Abracadabra, hey Presto" and switched on the lights, tossing her top hat into a crowd of ten thousand people. However, she had faced criticism when she first sang the song in Strike a New Note at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1943, with J.B. Priestley disapproving of her "strange, hermaphroditic garb."
Gail was married to Hubert Gregg, with whom she had one child, Stacey Gregg. She was also married to Bert Bernard.
Gail's passing is a loss for the entertainment industry, and her legacy will be remembered by her fans and colleagues alike. She will be greatly missed.
