Ian McIntosh, a Southern Rhodesian-born Zimbabwean rugby union coach, passed away on April 5, 2023, at the age of 84. He had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment at an Umhlanga hospital at the time of his passing.
McIntosh was born and raised near Bulawayo in Matabeleland, Southern Rhodesia, which is now known as Zimbabwe. Although he never played for his country's rugby team, he became a prominent coach in the sport.
In the 1970s, McIntosh learned coaching skills from Ray Williams, the then Welsh Rugby Union coaching director. He went on to serve as head coach for the Springboks during 1993 and 1994. He was also a Springbok selector for 13 years, and he mentored numerous South African national coaches in the senior and junior ranks throughout his career.
Even after retiring from coaching, McIntosh remained involved in rugby through the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA). He will be remembered for his contributions to the sport, both as a coach and a mentor.
Ian McIntosh is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His legacy in the world of rugby will not be forgotten.
