On April 2, 1928, Dolly Rathebe was born in Randfontein, South Africa, and grew up in the vibrant neighborhood of Sophiatown. Little did she know that her life would become an incredible legacy of music and film. In 1948, a talent scout from Gallo discovered Rathebe and she quickly became a star. Sadly, Rathebe passed away on September 16, 2004, at the age of 76 due to a stroke. But her immense contribution to South African culture will always be remembered and celebrated.
