South African rugby mourns the passing of former Springbok lock Piet Botha, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024, at the age of 88.
A Gentle Giant on the Field
Described as a "big man with a small heart," Botha was known for his physical presence on the field. Standing tall in the lock position, his strength and determination were valuable assets to the Springbok team.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Botha's Springbok career held great promise. He was selected for the 1965 tour to New Zealand, showcasing his talent at a young age. Unfortunately, a shoulder dislocation during the tour hampered his fitness and limited his appearances for the national team.
A Legacy of Sportsmanship
Despite the setback, Botha remained a devoted supporter of the sport. President of the South African Rugby Union, Mr. Mark Alexander, highlighted Botha's love for both his family and rugby. He will be remembered as a true sportsman and a kind individual.
Our Thoughts are with His Family
The South African Rugby Union extends its heartfelt condolences to Botha's wife Annette, their family, and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find solace in the memories of a wonderful man who left his mark on South African rugby.
