South African rugby mourns the passing of Hannes Strydom, a member of the iconic 1995 Rugby World Cup winning Springbok squad. Strydom died at the age of 58 on November 19, 2023, following a car accident.
A stalwart lock, Strydom played 21 Tests for the Springboks between 1993 and 1997. He was a key figure in the team's historic victory on home soil in 1995, starting the final against New Zealand at Ellis Park under the watchful eye of President Nelson Mandela.
Tributes poured in from the rugby world, with many remembering Strydom's work ethic and dedication. South African Rugby President Mark Alexander described him as "a hard-working lock who never shied away from getting stuck in and doing the dirty work."
Beyond his World Cup triumph, Strydom also enjoyed a successful domestic career, representing the Lions and winning the Currie Cup, Vodacom Cup, and Super 10 titles in the 1990s.
After retiring from rugby, Strydom transitioned into the business world, owning a chain of pharmacies.
Hannes Strydom is survived by his wife Nikolie, their children Annalie, Hannes, and Lucy, and his extended family and friends. He will be remembered as a World Cup champion, a dedicated teammate, and a true rugby legend.
