South Africa mourns the passing of Pastor Ray McCauley, founder of Rhema Bible Church, who passed away peacefully on 08 October 2024 at the age of 75.
"It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness" announced Pastor Joshua McCauley, his son and senior pastor at Rhema Bible Church. "Pastor Ray went to be with the Lord peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family and loved ones."
Pastor Ray's life was a testament to transformation and dedication. Born in Johannesburg in 1949, his early years were far removed from the pulpit. He carved a successful career in bodybuilding, even claiming the title of Mr. South Africa and achieving a commendable third place in the 1974 Mr. Universe competition. He also worked as a nightclub bouncer. However, a spiritual awakening in 1978 led him to attend the Rhema Bible Training Center in Oklahoma with his wife Lyndie.
Upon returning to South Africa, their unwavering faith led them to establish Rhema Bible Church in 1979. Humble beginnings with just 13 attendees in the McCauley family home blossomed under Pastor Ray's leadership. The church grew rapidly, necessitating larger venues culminating in their current 7,500-seat auditorium in Randburg. Today, Rhema Bible Church boasts over 45,000 members.
Pastor Ray's influence extended far beyond the church walls. He played a crucial role in South Africa's historic transition to democracy. His commitment to dialogue fostered peace and reconciliation during the late apartheid years. He interacted with prominent figures like Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Reverend Frank Chikane, forging bridges across the nation's evolving political landscape.
Furthermore, Pastor Ray's leadership transcended national boundaries. He served as President of the International Federation of Christian Churches (IFCC) and co-chaired the National Interfaith Council of South Africa (NICSA). His powerful oratory and unwavering faith resonated with audiences at global evangelical events, inspiring countless lives.
Though he stepped back from active church duties in his later years, Pastor Ray's dedication to his mission remained unwavering. His legacy as a servant leader will continue to impact communities for generations to come.
