Former SABC Sports Broadcaster and Artist Advocate, Dies at 54
South Africa is mourning the death of Owen Ndlovu, a respected broadcaster, sports personality and advocate for artists, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 54.
For many South Africans, Ndlovu was a familiar presence through his work with SABC Sports, where his passion for broadcasting and sport helped establish him as a recognisable figure in the country’s media landscape.
Yet his contribution extended far beyond the television screen.
Throughout his career, Ndlovu remained deeply connected to South Africa’s creative community. He became known for championing the interests of musicians and artists, lending his voice to conversations around recognition, opportunities and the rights of those working within the entertainment industry.
Those who followed his journey knew a man whose work crossed the worlds of sport, broadcasting, music and advocacy.
His death on 16 September 2026, following his reported kidnapping the previous evening, has brought a sudden and heartbreaking end to that journey. He was later found dead in Thokoza, leaving behind grieving loved ones, colleagues and members of the industries in which he had spent so many years building his legacy.
The circumstances of his passing are deeply tragic, but they should not become the defining chapter of his life.
Owen Ndlovu should also be remembered for the years that came before: the broadcasts, the conversations, the opportunities he helped create, the causes he supported and the people who came to know his voice and his work.
Behind every public figure is also a husband, a family member, a friend and a loved one whose absence will be felt in ways no headline can fully capture.
As tributes continue to pour in, South Africa says goodbye to a man whose voice formed part of its sporting and entertainment story.
Owen Ndlovu leaves behind more than a career. He leaves behind memories, relationships and a contribution that will continue to be remembered long after the microphones have fallen silent.
Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, family, friends, colleagues and all those mourning his loss.
May his soul rest in peace.
