It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tokollo Tshabalala, a South African Kwaito musician who was born on October 14, 1976, in Johannesburg. He passed away on August 15, 2022 at the age of 46.
Tshabalala was a talented musician who started his career as part of the group Mashsmplani in 1995, before joining forces with his high school friends Kabelo Mabalane and Zwai Bala to form the iconic Kwaito group TKZee.
Tshabalala was known for his larger-than-life persona and infectious energy that he brought to his music. He was a true pioneer of the Kwaito genre and played a significant role in shaping the South African music industry.
Despite being the son of one of the best-known sporting figures in the country, Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala, who was a founding member of the Kaizer Chiefs Football Club, Tshabalala chose to pursue his own passion in music.
With the release of the chart-topping single "Phalafala" in 1997, Tshabalala and his group TKZee burst onto the scene, becoming an instant sensation across the country. His signature phrase "Sbu batshele ses’fikile!" at the beginning of the song became an iconic catchphrase that will forever be remembered.
Throughout TKZee's illustrious run over the next decade, Tshabalala led the way with his larger-than-life persona, contributing to some of the group's biggest hits, including "Shibobo," "Dlala Mapantsula," and "We Love This Place."
Tshabalala's legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his fans and the South African music industry as a whole. His contributions to the Kwaito genre and the South African music scene will always be remembered.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.
